Zap! Pow! Home décor gets a pop art punch

Pop Art Comic Print

Today I want to share with you an interesting article I came across while doing my morning reading.  Titled Zap! Pow! Home décor gets a pop art punch, the article addresses the resurgence of Pop Art. Originally a major movement in late 60’s and early 70s décor and characterized by futuristic furnishings, Pop Art is back and in a way that’s both fresh and fun.  The article discusses ways to add a bit of “pop” to your décor by highlighting products from top retailers like the two seen here.

Pop Art Wall Decor

I saw it on Google News, but a quick search of this article’s title revealed that this article is EVERYWHERE (apparently I’m not the only one who thought it was great!). So you can check it out at whichever site you prefer, I know everyone has their own preferences for news reading – MSNBC, New York Times, ABC News, Newsday, San Francisco Chronicle for those of you on the west coast and Asbury Park Press for those of us on the East. Definitely worth a read. Enjoy!

Light Up Chair

Light Up Chair

Inspired by curiosity, this chair is much more than a seat.  It’s both a chair and a lamp, designed with organic lines.  Multifunctional (yes!) but that’s not all. This ergonomic chair is also designed for comfort and clearly for practicality. You’ll never have to worry about not having enough light again. It’s also maintenance free making so you can use it outside or by the pool or wherever you want really. This is cool. Where would you use it?

This is just one of the innovative pieces you’ll find at Ontwerpers here.

Summer Is Gone

Totem

It’s below 70 degrees here today, and I’m already cold. No, I’m definitely not a fan of winter. I found something that might help though, that I want to share with all of you today. From I-radium comes the Totem, a portable space heater designed to complement your décor. Sure, space heaters have been around for some time, but they definitely weren’t anything you wanted to look at. Now you can be warm and in style. And well that makes my day!

See more at I-radium’s website and get yourself one before it actually gets cold out 😉

Pencils as art?

Pencil Flower

When I was younger, I once made a pencil can out of pencils and I thought I was pretty cool.  So maybe my talent was a little questionable, but artist Jennifer Maestre has indeed made of art from this unconventional medium.  Made of the ends of used pencils, not only has Maestre discovered something cool to do with material that would otherwise be discarded, but her work really is captivating.  Pictured here is just a small selection of here pieces.  See more at her website.

So what do you think – can pencils be art?

Preview – London Design Week

Strathmore Rug

You know when your plane starts descending and you know it’s almost time to land, and you look out the window and see the same world you’ve always seen but in a whole new way – from above it all?  It’s a common experience that I’m sure many of us have shared, the beauty of which designer Liz Eeuwes appreciated enough to capture.  Her new collection of rugs illustrates exactly that, and you can see from these images that it is both an intriguing idea and a beautifully illustrated concept.

Strathmore Rug

Pictured in these two images is the Strathmore Rug, inspired by a bird’s eye view of the Scottish countryside.  Her collection also includes the Lisse inspired by Tulip Fields and the Bali by rice patty terraces. This collection will be shown in the Futures Area at 100% Design as part of London Design Week 2009 from September 24-27. Learn more at Eeuwes’ website.

Does Inmod Have Beef With Kanye?!

Kanye West Pillow

Looks like our friends over at Inmod have beef with Kanye. After his VMA outburst, it seems like everyone loves to hate Kanye  West (even the furniture and décor sector of the world apparently!)  But he does deserve it don’t you think?

Over at Inmod you can now design your own pillow that makes fun of the jilted rapper/self-proclaimed new king of pop.  Thoughts!?
