Joris Laarman

leaf-table

The reason I find the work of Joris Laarman so interesting is that all of it is inspired by life sciences, and made using cutting edge technology. The combination is certainly intriguing, and it only takes a brief look at his work to realize how incredible it is.

bone-chair

Shown here is his new Leaf Table made from resin, steel, aluminum and inspired by the veins of leaves.  Also pictured is the Bone Chair. Even though it is from 2006 I still think it’s worth discussing. What is interesting about this chair, besides its name, is that Laarman actually used technology from the German auto industry to produce a chair that reduces and strengthens by optimizing material allocation, weight and stability to actually require less material.

Moonbasket

moonbasket

This stunning pendant is part of Moonbasket, a project started by designer and artist Dani Le Roy from Cape Town. This community based project involves a dynamic team of people and all natural materials like string and braids made from cotton and jute.

The unique quality of each of these lamps combines with their simple, honest look to create their luxurious appeal. In fact, the artists’ idea was to emphasize the point that crochet is one of the few crafts that can only be done by people and not replaced by machines, and that honest handmade beauty is certainly apparent here. Time Flies!

chrono-shredder

It’s the end of another week.  Need a reminder how fast time goes? Check out Susanna Hetrich’s Chrono-shredder, which does just that. The Chrono-shredder reminds you of every passing day with a fun design that shreds each calendar day.  Maybe it will motivate you to quit wasting time, or maybe you just enjoy playing with a paper shredder. Either way, this design is cool in my book.  Check out more from designer Susanna Hertrich here.

Happy Friday friends!  See you back here Monday.

CMYK Pillows

cmyk-pillow

Any graphic designer will appreciate these CMYK pillows from Thomas Dabner.  These pillows first reminded my of a Pantone swatch book, but in fact Dabner said he actually designed them from designers who share his frustration with low running ink – and knowing you have no new cartridges left.

Each CMYK pillow is printed on 100% 230gr/m² cotton and is washable at 80 degrees Celsius without fading.  See more here.

The Garden Party Table

garden-party

It’s time to start thinking outdoor parties, and I’ve got just what you need.  The Garden Party Table, designed by Alain Gilles, has both a cool look and a smart functional design.  Its center has a built-in cooler perfect for whatever it is you’re celebrating with.  What more do you need?!

The stools in the image are pretty cool too right?  Notice the hook under the seat, yup it’s for your purse! These come from Cedric Ragot

The Sony Fusion

laptop-coffee-table

Despite having a large empty desk and a room at home devoted entirely to being an office space, my laptop pretty much lives on my coffee table.  I’m not really sure why, it just always winds up this way –  probably has something to do with constantly multitasking.

laptop-table2

Luckily someone at Sony must have been experiencing the same thing. The Sony Fusion is a coffee table with a built in laptop! A simple push of a button converts the table into a work station with a touch sensitive keyboard and adjustable screen.  It’s not available yet, but this brilliant concept is expected to be in production soon, in three different colors and around $3000.
